Free Plastic Surgery CampIn its continuous endeavor aimed at the welfare of humanity, The Kalgidhar Trust organized a Plastic Surgery Camp at Akal Charitable Hospital, Baru Sahib from 17 to 25 April, 2010. The camp was a huge success. Several complicated surgeries were performed by a team of doctors and health professionals from Canada, USA and UK, they work under the program, Operation Rainbow Canada (ORC).
The team leader Dr. Kimit Rai, who is unarguably among the best in the world, for fixing cleft-lip and cleft-palate, was accompanied by a 27-strong contingent comprising of specialist doctors, nurses and support staff. These services were provided free of cost to the poor of the remote rural hilly Himalayan region. It was a unique case of medical tourism - probably the first of its kind in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Patients from better developed place in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan also traveled to this remote corner to avail of the world-class health services. |
This 9-day long camp witnessed an untiring effort by the specialists in their fields like Dr. Kimit Rai, Dr. Sandra Voice, Dr. Robert Purdy, Dr. Catherine Brand, Dr. Bill Abbot, Dr. Nazmuddin Banji, Dr. Amera Murabit, Dr. Kelvin Calder and Dr. Deepak Manhas. In this one of its type camp, about 300 surgeries were performed. Notable among these were the cleft-lip (12), cleft-lip repair (13), cleft-palate (12), cleft-palate and lip repair (12) and contractures following burns (21).
An approximate expenditure of Rupees 81 lakhs was incurred on the services provided virtually at the doorsteps of those, who had not even dreamt of getting cured.
